Healthy Baby: How To Keep Your Home Germ-Free

It’s a germ-filled world out there, and we’re just living in it. When you bring a new baby into the world, it’s easy to let your mind wander into the dark crevices of your kitchen and suddenly obsess over the enormous dust bunnies living under your bed. But, germs are a part of life—and sometimes they can even be a good thing. Keeping your baby’s environment as safe as possible without turning into a total clean freak is one of many struggles that new parents face!

So, where should you start your household cleaning and disinfecting? Let’s go room by room!

 

THE KITCHEN

This might come as a surprise, but the kitchen is the dirtiest place in your home. Gross! And, as a new parent (or human being, really), contact with the kitchen is unavoidable. Here are some of the ways you can keep your kitchen as healthy and clean as possible.

 

  1. Food prep: If you prepare any sort of raw meat, poultry or fish, always disinfect the area immediately after.
  2. Floors: Wash your floor regularly with a disinfectant cleaner and clean rags. Then wash the soiled rags with detergent and bleach.
  3. Sponges: Place sponges in the microwave often (preferably after each use) and invest in a drying rack that you can place your sponge on so that moisture and germs don’t fester.

 

Pro tip: Put your sponges and dish scrubs in the dishwasher. Run as usual, just add a little bit of bleach (or a bleach alternative, such as hydrogen peroxide).

THE BATHROOM

Unsurprisingly, the bathroom is also one of the most germ-filled spots in the house. Here’s how to keep those germs at bay.

 

  1. Sinks & countertops: Wipe these down as often as possible with a disinfectant wipe or spray.
  2. Toilets: Use bleach (or hydrogen peroxide, if you’re looking for something less harsh) to keep your toilets as germ-free as possible.
  3. Toothbrush holder: Run this in the dishwasher one or twice a week. Or, hand wash in soapy hot water.

 

THE BEDROOM

We spend half our lives in our bed and bedroom, so you can expect to find germs there too. Between dead skin cells and dust mites (yikes!), here’s how to keep your bedroom clean!

 

  1. Sheets: Wash your sheets once a week in hot water to kill dust mites. Consider anti-allergy mattress wraps that can keep mite waste from contaminating the air.
  2. Floors: Wet-mop the floor with an antibacterial product
  3. Stuffed animals: These lovies get too much love! Wash your children’s stuffed animals in cold water, then tumble dry with no heat.
