How To Protect Your Baby's Skin During The Winter

Winter conjures up feelings of the holidays, warming up by the fire, bundling up in cozy knits and spending time snuggled under warm, wool blankets. That sounds great for adults, but winter weather can be particularly harsh on your baby’s delicate skin. To take some of the stress out of keeping your baby’s skin protected, here is our experts’ list of ways to keep your baby’s skin safe this winter.

Keep reading for five ways to protect your baby’s skin this winter.

  1. Use a mild, moisturizing baby wash. A mild, pH-neutral baby wash created for sensitive newborn skin is generally recommended (adult soaps are way too harsh on your little one and can dry out their sensitive skin!).
  2. Use a humidifier. This tip is good for the whole family! Winter weather can leave the air in your home dry. Turning on a humidifier at night helps moisten the air. In addition to hydrating your child’s skin, it also prevents chest congestion which can quickly develop into a cough or cold.
  3. Change their diapers often. Change your baby’s diaper often, since wet diapers harm the skin and cause rashes! Also always be sure to add a nice layer of ointment or diaper rash cream as an extra barrier for the skin. Avoid using baby powder as it can actually sap the skin of moisture.
  4. Go easy on the blankets. It might be tempting to bundle up your bundle of joy, but while they’re sleeping, babies should never be covered in layers of blankets. Blankets can cause them to overheat, which can lead to rashes or dry skin, and if the child is under 1 year of age, it can also increase the risk of SIDS.
  5. Use proper outdoor apparel. Dress your baby in mittens, booties, and beanies to cover them up and protect them when they’re outside. You can also use a cover over the stroller to further prevent dry air from stripping their skin of moisture. Re-apply moisturizer as needed when you get back indoors.
